Bentonite & Tunneling Slurry Rotary Lobe Pumps

Review rotary lobe pumps for bentonite and tunneling slurry transfer, with attention to the circuit duty, solids concentration, abrasive particles, inlet supply, and maintenance access.

Identify the Slurry Stream & Circuit Duty

Prepared bentonite mud, recycled slurry, and soil-laden returns can impose different duties. Specify the transfer point in the drilling or tunneling circuit and describe any screening or separation before the pump inlet.

Slurry properties
Concentration, density, and flow behavior. Provide solids concentration with its mass or volume basis, slurry density, temperature, and observations of settling or difficult restarts.
Particles & debris
Size, shape, mineral content, and loading. Describe quartz sand, rock chips, hard stones, fibers, and foreign material separately, including maximum sizes reaching the pump.

Particle Abrasion & Replaceable Wear Parts

Assess particle size, shape, mineral composition, concentration, and operating speed together when reviewing abrasion. Hardness alone does not establish the appropriate liner or rotor material, or the service life of the wet end.

For the proposed model, confirm wear-part grades, replaceable surfaces, inspection access, and spare-part availability. Any carbide wear surface or alternative material should be assessed against the actual slurry and component design rather than treated as a standard solution for all tunneling duties.

Slurry Duty and Wear Review
Review Point Why It Matters Data Needed
Concentration and density The measurement basis is needed to interpret the slurry duty Solids percentage by mass or volume, slurry density, temperature, flow behavior
Particles and contaminants Hard grit and large debris affect wear and passage differently Mineral composition, particle size and shape, maximum hard solids, fibers, upstream screening
Flow and pressure The drive must suit startup and the complete pipeline duty Flow range, discharge pressure, pipe diameter and length, elevation, shutdown duration

Rotor Coverings & Interrupted Inlet Supply

Review polyurethane or other proposed rotor coverings against particle characteristics, temperature, chemistry, and the selected operating conditions. A material name alone does not establish resistance to cutting, impact, or abrasion for every slurry.

If settling, a blocked inlet, or batch operation can interrupt supply, review inlet layout, restart conditions, seal support, and shutdown controls. Any allowable empty-running exposure depends on the selected configuration, speed, and duration.

Debris Passage, Screening & Service Access

Check hard stones, rock chips, geofabric, wires, and long fibers against the proposed pump’s passage geometry. A soft-solids passage figure should not be used as an allowable rock size; review screening and foreign-material removal for the actual incoming debris.

Confirm how the pump is isolated, opened, and cleaned, which parts can be removed without disturbing the pipeline, and the space needed for covers and lifting. Use the proposed installation layout to assess access rather than assuming a standard blockage-clearance time.

Data for Bentonite & Tunneling Slurry Pump Sizing

  • Slurry: prepared mud or return stream, solids concentration with mass or volume basis, density, temperature, particle sizes and mineral content, fibers, and chemistry.
  • Duty: flow and pressure with units, operating cycle, shutdown duration, settling or restart behavior, and current wear or blockage history.
