Adhesive & Paint Rotary Lobe Pumps
Review rotary lobe pumps for adhesives, primers, and paints using the formulation’s viscosity, product quality requirements, curing behavior, and filler content to define the transfer duty.

Tank transfer, batch filling, and process feed can require different flow rates and pressure. Identify the water-based, solvent-based, or reactive system and whether components reach the pump separately or already mixed.
- Product behavior
- Viscosity and quality limits. Provide viscosity at the starting and operating temperatures, plus any known shear or air-entrainment sensitivity.
- Operating cycle
- Transfer, idle, and cleaning. Describe batch duration, curing or skinning behavior where relevant, cleaning fluids, and the longest planned shutdown.
Viscosity, Inlet Feeding & Product Quality
Use viscosity data with temperature, units, and measurement conditions. For products whose viscosity changes with shear, provide the available flow curve rather than a single catalogue value. Cold-start conditions and the inlet pipe layout affect feeding and drive selection.
Where product quality is shear-sensitive, agree on acceptance checks such as viscosity, dispersion, or entrained air before selecting speed and clearances. Assess representative product trials when needed; a low-speed setting alone does not establish acceptable coating or adhesive quality.
| Review Point | Why It Matters | Data Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Starting and running viscosity | Affects inlet supply, speed, and drive requirements | Viscosity with units, temperature, test conditions, and suction layout |
| Product quality limits | Sets the criteria for evaluating transfer | Known shear sensitivity, air limits, and before-and-after acceptance checks |
| Flow and pressure | Defines the operating points for each transfer stage | Required flow, discharge pressure, batch time, and downstream restrictions |
Seal Compatibility, Curing & Shutdown Cleaning
Review wetted metals, rotor coverings, seal faces, and elastomers against the complete formulation, temperature range, and cleaning fluids. Include solvents and additives; compatibility with the base resin or water alone is insufficient.
If the product skins, dries, or reacts during idle, provide its exposure conditions and working time. Agree on drain, flush, and restart procedures for the proposed seal arrangement, including the support fluid and monitoring where required. Follow the selected equipment’s instructions for connections and leakage handling.
Specify the cleaning agent, temperature, sequence, and acceptable product carryover. Confirm the proposed pump’s cleaning method and access; flushing alone does not establish that all residue has been removed.
Pigments, Fillers & Wear Inspection
For filled formulations, report pigment or filler identity, concentration with its measurement basis, particle size, and any agglomerates or settled solids. Abrasiveness depends on the actual particles and operating conditions; not every primer or paint has the same wear duty.
Review passage clearances, wetted materials, and available replaceable wear components for the selected model. Plan inspections around the actual filler loading and operating cycle, using changes in flow, pressure, or product leakage to inform maintenance.
