Mining Tailings Rotary Lobe Pumps

Review rotary lobe pumps for mining tailings and mineral slurry transfer, with attention to solids concentration, particle characteristics, liquid chemistry, inlet supply, and pipeline restarts.

Define the Tailings Stream & Transfer Point

Identify the mineral process and whether the pump handles dilute tailings, thickener underflow, or another mineral slurry. Provide the source and destination, upstream preparation, and expected operating changes rather than treating all mine slurries as one duty.

Concentration & density
State the measurement basis. Provide solids percentage by mass or volume, slurry density, and solids density if available. Include settling and flow behavior after a shutdown.
Particles & liquid phase
Minerals, size distribution, and chemistry. Describe particle sizes, maximum hard solids, shape and hardness, process reagents, pH, and temperature. Tailings chemistry should be established from the actual stream.

Abrasive Wear & Chemical Compatibility

Review particle characteristics, concentration, operating speed, and liquid chemistry together. Abrasion and corrosion can impose different requirements on casings, liners, wear plates, seals, and rotor coverings; neither mineral hardness nor pH alone establishes the material selection.

Confirm the actual component grades and replaceable wear surfaces for the proposed pump. Stainless steel, duplex, or carbide surfaces need assessment against the slurry and component design; a material designation does not establish a service-life improvement.

Rotor Coverings & Particle Passage

Assess polyurethane or other proposed coverings against particle shape, loading, temperature, and chemical exposure. Check maximum hard solids and foreign material against the selected pump’s passage geometry; a soft-solids passage figure is not an allowable rock size.

Inlet Supply, Settling & Pipeline Restarts

Review source levels, pump elevation, inlet restrictions, and how settling changes the material reaching the pump. Include startup after storage or shutdown separately from normal running when assessing drive load and discharge pressure.

Use the complete pipe route to review flow, pressure protection, shutdown, and restart arrangements. Provide any mixing or flushing procedure used at the site. If supply can be interrupted, confirm seal support and allowable exposure for the selected configuration rather than assuming unrestricted empty running.

Tailings Transfer-System Review
Review Point Why It Matters Data Needed
Inlet supply Levels and settled material can change chamber filling Source level range, pump elevation, inlet layout, slurry flow behavior
Flow and pressure The pump and drive must match the complete pipeline duty Flow range, pressure, pipe diameter and length, elevation, fittings, operating hours
Shutdown and restart Settling and interrupted supply may change the starting conditions Shutdown duration, mixing or flushing arrangements, restart sequence, pressure protection, seal support

Wear Inspection & Maintenance Access

Confirm how the proposed pump is isolated, opened, and inspected, which parts are replaceable, and whether the pipeline must be disturbed. Include cover and rotor removal space, lifting access, cleaning arrangements, and spare-part availability in the layout.

Use actual wear history and inspections to plan service intervals. When comparing pump types, include the removal envelope and the components needing replacement rather than assuming a standard repair time or wear life.

Data for Mining Tailings Pump Sizing

  • Slurry: process stream, solids concentration with mass or volume basis, slurry and solids density where available, particle sizes and hardness, chemistry, temperature, and settling behavior.
  • Duty: flow and pressure with units, operating hours, shutdown duration, restart conditions, and current wear or blockage history.
  • Installation: source levels, pump elevation, inlet and discharge pipe layout, available drive and controls, mixing or flushing arrangements, and maintenance space.
