MBR Membrane Suction & Backwash Rotary Lobe Pumps
Review rotary lobe pumps for MBR permeate suction and backwash, with attention to membrane limits, flow in each direction, suction stability, and cleaning chemistry.
Request Pump SizingDefine the Membrane Suction & Backwash Duty
Start with the membrane manufacturer’s operating limits and process sequence. Permeate extraction, reverse backwash, and sludge circulation are different duties: confirm which liquid the pump handles and whether it is required to operate in both directions.
- Filtration
- Permeate extraction. Provide flow per train, suction conditions, membrane pressure limits, and the normal operating cycle.
- Backwash
- Separate reverse duty. Provide reverse flow, pressure, duration, frequency, and the source of backwash liquid. Confirm whether the same pump is intended for both duties.
Backwash Reversal & System Controls
Where a reversible pump is proposed, assess filtration and backwash as separate operating points. Confirm the pump, seals, valves, and piping are suitable for both directions; reversing the motor alone does not establish a complete backwash system.
Review valve timing, speed ramps, and pressure protection together so that switching does not exceed membrane or piping limits. Equal flow in both directions and the removal of a separate backwash pump should not be assumed.
| Review Point | Why It Matters | Data Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Operating points | Filtration and backwash can require different flow and pressure | Flow, pressure or vacuum, units, measurement locations, and membrane limits for each duty |
| Switching sequence | Valve positions and speed changes affect transient pressure | Valve sequence, ramp times, backwash duration, and cycle interval |
| Pressure protection | The pressure side changes when flow reverses | Piping diagram, pressure limits, relief arrangement, and control interlocks for each direction |
Suction Stability & Seal Support
Review suction pipework, valve integrity, liquid levels, and potential gas accumulation when filtration flow or vacuum is unstable. Provide the pump elevation, pipe sizes and lengths, and any measured suction data rather than selecting from a general self-priming height.
Confirm the seal arrangement and support requirements for the selected pump. If priming or empty-pipe exposure can occur, review its duration, speed, liquid availability, and shutdown controls; dry-running capability must be confirmed for the actual configuration.
Cleaning Chemistry & Wetted Materials
Identify whether cleaning solution passes through the pump. Provide each chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure time, and rinse sequence so that rotor coverings, seals, and other wetted materials can be reviewed together.
Describe the liquid and solids actually entering the pump. Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) describes the bioreactor contents; it should not be used as the pump’s solids loading without confirming the pump’s position in the process.
